Course Outline
General Description

This 60 - 80 hour short course is designed to introduce and provide basic training in the revolutionary Applied Scholastics® teaching principles from the education research of Mr. Hubbard.

These principles have been used by Applied Scholastics® in teaching teachers in China, and have been found to be very suitable for

improving and modernizing the conditions of the Chinese education system. They have also been used effectively in many other parts of the world, including Russia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Japan, as well as many Western countries.
The course is delivered as a series of modules or units. Each module has a "check sheet" accompanying it, which is the individual lesson plan for that module. The check sheet is a careful balance of theory and practical steps resulting in full achievement of the outcomes of the course. The style of teaching is a supervised self-paced learning format, allowing the students to study at their own pace. The modules are listed below, with a brief description of each:

1. Introduction: Research by author and educator L Ron Hubbard resulted in breakthroughs in education. The Applied Scholastics® International network has been set up to introduce and implement this research in application to all areas of education. Teachers are given general background information on Applied Scholastics' world-wide network of schools, and this study method.

2. Communication: This module investigates what communication actually consists of and how to use the key components to enhance the individual's ability and the educational process. It gives the fundamental information on these key elements necessary for the teachers to have successful communication skills, consequently improving relationships in all areas of life.

3. Language Basics: The Applied Scholastics® research principles applied to language learning have isolated the fundamentals needed to quickly and easily learn a new language. The emphasis on the sequence and specific parts of the language process provides remarkable gain in a short time.

A very fundamental part of learning to speak and understand a foreign language is to learn the speech sounds (phonemes) of that language, and to be able to hear and say those sounds. Here, the student teacher will become certain about the 44 speech sounds of English and the international symbols (called International Phonetic Alphabet) used to communicate each of these sounds.

Additionally the student teacher will learn the many different sounds that letters and combinations of letters of the alphabet can make, for use in their teaching. This is basic training in phonics which is the teaching of reading using a knowledge of speech sounds, and the letters and combination of letters (called phonograms) which are connected to those sounds. This is useful in teaching ESUEFL and basic literacy skills in English.

This module also introduces the breakthrough principle of "key words" - (the most important words in subjects), and gives correct definitions for key words that a student needs to understand when learning a language, such as "letter", "sound", "alphabet", "read", "syllable", "pronunciation", "intonation".

4.
Study Technology® :This covers new data on why students give up study, why study is boring, why they fail in some subjects, how trouble in the area of study can lead to criminal behavior. This is called 'Study Technology' and explains the barriers students encounter, how to recognize the symptoms of each barrier and technology to handle overcoming them.

Using this data, students can easily and rapidly learn and apply their material, leading to competent and independent learning. This in the future will improve the economic and technological ability of an entire country.

5. For English Teachers: ESL - Conversation, Vocabulary, Oral Grammar, Diary Writing, Reading, Listening: Specific practical hands-on data is used in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking to dramatically improve these areas in the students.

This module covers classroom procedures for developing specific reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The use of partners, and grouping students in the classroom as well as use of the communication skills are focused on.

6.
How to Handle the Rebellious Child: In the area of dealing with children and teenagers, Mr. Hubbard's research has proved that anyone can learn how to improve any relationship by the application of specific basic principles. This particularly applies to teachers. In this module, very exact data is studied on the subject of rebellious children who quite often become a problem for society later on if not handled. This information is invaluable for parents and teachers, and relates directly to barriers to study learned in module (4).

7. The Art of Listening and Communicating. What is understanding? What is it composed of.7 How do we increase understanding? In this module is new, exact and workable social technology about the understanding process itself This module enlightens the teachers on what understanding is composed of, and how the 3 parts that make up understanding can be used very effectively in teaching and personal relationships. It includes study of the Emotional Tone Scale to give an understanding of the range of human emotions and its relationship to the students' understanding.

8. Teaching Axioms: If teachers can know what the fundamental rules regarding teaching are, this will make a very big difference to their ability to teach. These rules have been formulated for simplicity, workability and effectiveness.

The axioms are the ten basic rules for successful teaching of any subject to any kind of student. These axioms will be explained in detail, and the student teachers, after understanding, will be asked for their ideas and their own application of these fundamental principles.

9. Lesson Planning: This covers tips to aid teachers when preparing lessons on a daily basis and from a viewpoint of developing themes and topics, so lessons build on earlier skills and knowledge learned.

10. Additional Study Tech® Data: Why is the actual standard of education decreasing in many countries? Further data from Hubbard's research will totally elevate the viewpoint of the teachers as to what quality education really is.
